WASHINGTON: The US House of Representatives has once again approved a War Powers Resolution directing President Donald Trump to withdraw American forces from the ongoing military conflict with Iran, marking another congressional challenge to the administration’s military strategy.

According to international media reports, the resolution was introduced by Democratic Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal and passed by a vote of 214 to 208.

All Democratic lawmakers voted in favor of the measure, while five Republican members broke with their party and joined Democrats in supporting the resolution.

This is the second time the House has approved a similar War Powers Resolution. A comparable measure was passed by the House last month and later received approval in the Senate.

Despite its political significance, the resolution carries limited legal authority. The Trump administration maintains that such War Powers resolutions are inconsistent with the US Constitution, arguing that the president, as Commander-in-Chief, has the constitutional authority to make military decisions concerning national security.

During the debate ahead of the vote, Representative Gregory Meeks, the ranking Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, accused President Trump of violating both US law and constitutional requirements by authorizing military action against Iran without prior congressional approval.

The resolution comes amid heightened tensions across the Middle East, as attacks by Yemen’s Houthi movement on Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea have contributed to rising global energy concerns, with crude oil prices climbing above $100 per barrel.

The latest congressional action reflects growing political divisions in Washington over the scope of US military involvement in the Middle East and the constitutional balance of war-making powers between Congress and the president.
