JAKARTA: Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has appointed career diplomat Arrmanatha Christiawan Nasir as the country’s new foreign minister in a major Cabinet reshuffle.

Nasir replaced Sugiono, who has moved to the post of Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture. Nasir formally took the oath of office at the State Palace in Jakarta on Thursday, October 1.

Career Diplomat Takes Foreign Ministry

Arrmanatha Nasir previously served as deputy foreign minister under Sugiono. He also served as Indonesia’s permanent representative to the United Nations in New York.

Nasir joined Indonesia’s diplomatic service in 1997. Over the years, he held several important diplomatic posts before becoming deputy foreign minister.

Following his appointment, Nasir said Indonesia would continue its established foreign policy. He also stressed the country’s commitment to regional and global stability and multilateralism.

Sugiono Gets New Cabinet Role

Sugiono served as foreign minister since Prabowo formed his government in 2024.

Under the reshuffle, he has now become Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture. The change was part of a wider Cabinet restructuring announced by Prabowo on September 30.

The president also appointed Suyudi Ario Seto as Indonesia’s new National Police Chief. Seto previously headed the National Narcotics Agency.

Nasir Sets Diplomatic Priorities

Nasir said Indonesia would continue pursuing its bid for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2029–2030 term.

He also said Indonesia would maintain its independent and active foreign policy while focusing on national interests. In addition, he highlighted Indonesia’s role in supporting peace, security and multilateral cooperation.

The appointment comes as Indonesia continues to navigate major regional and global diplomatic issues. Nasir’s previous experience at the United Nations and in the Foreign Ministry will now shape his work as the country’s top diplomat.
